Afe Babalola blames ASUU for delay in varsity reopening

The founder, Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Chief Afe Babalola, on Monday said the Academic Staff of Union of Universities’ refusal to end strike was the cause of the non-inclusion of final year students of tertiary institutions in the list of graduating pupils and students directed to resume by the Federal Government.

The ABUAD founder spoke in a statement entitled, “ASUU: The commander-in-chief of Nigerian public universities – Afe Babalola” where he reacted to the Federal Government’s announcement of resumption of final year pupils and students of primary and secondary schools and  left out tertiary institutions.

He said, “The Federal Government was aware that if it directed final year students of public universities to resume, ASUU would object and in this case, ASUU has objected.”

Babalola advised the Federal Government to treat education as a necessary social service where strike actions were forbidden.

He said, “The Federal Government went wrong by not insulating private universities from the public universities. The future of this country with regards to quality and functional education lies with private universities.”
